Can Chickens Eat Pineapple?
This is a question we’ve received quite a bit over the years. Chickens eat quite a few things, and many people want to know if they can eat a pineapple or if it is harmful to them. There are some foods we should avoid giving chickens, but pineapple is not generally one of them. Whether they’re foraging or eating out of a chicken feeder, you have to be careful what you allow your flock to eat!
Citrus and Fruit
One of the reasons people believe they should not feed pineapple to their chickens is that many online bloggers recommend against feeding citrus to chickens. Of course, pineapple is not a citrus fruit, but it’s understandable that people believe it to be similar in nature to citrus like lime, orange, and lemons. Citrus makes almost every list of things you should not feed your chickens, but the truth is that they can actually enjoy some citrus here and there.
Too much citrus can absolutely be a bad idea. Some people believe it slows down egg production, while others report it causes diarrhea. Be careful with citrus, and watch your hens to see what happens.
What Will They Eat?
In general, chickens will eat what they like. With pineapple, you can try giving your chickens a little bit and see how they respond. Although not always the case, chickens will often take what they want to eat and leave the rest. You can see if they eat the pineapple or leave it alone, and decide from there.
