Chicken Feeder Information and Products
Whether you have foragers or brooders, a good chicken feeder is an important supply for your hens. Chicken feeders are the best way to feed your flock, and you have to find the right one for your coop and chickens. You can read our post What Do Chickens Eat? for more information about what to feed your flock!
Types of Chicken Feeders
There are several different ways to feed your chickens out of a feeder. The first type of chicken feeder is our favorite, the suspended chicken feeder. This is just like the name suggests: a feeder that hangs in the coop around the chicken’s head. A suspended feeder is our favorite because chickens cannot knock it over, use it as a restroom, or move it. Chickens can eat out of a suspended feeder with relative ease as long as it is placed correctly.
There are also the treadle chicken feeder, a box that sits on the ground. Treadles have a little platform that the chickens stand on to open the feeder. It’s a great option because it closes, preventing bugs and other animals from getting to the food. Chickens may be confused by these feeders, but they often understand it as they watch other members of their flock use it. The only downside to a treadle is that chickens may end up making a mess!
Finally, there are PVC feeders. These are chicken feeders made using a piece of piping or plumbing. They’re often attached to the side of a coop, and serve as a way to keep the food secure. Your hens can walk up and eat the food at the bottom of the feeder, and the rest is kept in the pipe. These are relatively easy to make oneself, which make them popular choices for chicken feeders and backyard flocks!
Where to Put the Chicken Feeder
There isn’t one spot to put your feeder. Depending on the type of feeder you decide to go with, there are different locations that work well. For a suspended feeder, we recommend putting it inside the coop. Keeping your feeder under cover helps keep the food safe from other critters, the weather, and moisture. It also allows your chickens to easily access it.
With PVC feeders and treadles, you can put them in the run of your chicken coop. Depending on the size of your chicken coop, there may not be room inside for the feeder. In the run, the chickens still have access easily to the food and it is protected at night from the wild animals looking for an easy meal!
How Big of a Feeder Do I Need?
There’s no one guideline for how big of a feeder your flock needs. However, you want to make sure your flock has room to eat together. If your feeder is too small, the chickens may peck or fight over access to food. You can choose to get one big feeder for your flock, or multiple smaller ones to allow room to access. You don’t want too much food or to overwhelm your hens with options, but you do want to make sure they have easy access to food.
There are tons of chicken feeders out there. You can make your own at home with piping, but here are a few of our favorites!
